December music and events

Thursday, December 1     7:30-9:30 p.m.
Pat Kane, Waverly NY
Irish and American, traditional and modern
On fiddle, guitar, and bodhran, Pat plays jigs, reels, square dances, and hundreds of ballads from Ireland and America. The audience is welcome to sing along on the selections with which they’re familiar. See:   http://www.westoclare.com/PatKane/

Friday, December 2     7:30-9:30 p.m.
Gary Barteau and Gavin Barteau, Angelica and Belfast NY
folk, rock, standards, country
Grandfather and grandson provide the music when they join forces as the duo called “The Toothless Flamingo”. Gary’s strong voice is the perfect match for Gavin’s steady rhythm. You’ll agree that their repertoire is as full and varied as their stories.

Saturday, December 3     7:30-9:30 p.m.
Fred Vine and Brian Williams, Rochester and Ionia NY
Fred is an excellent fingerstyle guitar player who also has a fine voice. His arrangements range from rootsy blues pieces to swinging jazzy sounds. Brian is the most rhythmic 'slap bass' player in upstate NY. Gordon Munding said, “Listening to Brian and Fred is like listening to a whole band." See:   http://www.fredvine.com/index.htm

Friday, December 9     7:30-9:30 p.m.
Rupert Wates, New York NY
songwriter, acoustic, melodic art/folk
In a few short years New York City based Rupert Wates has won a ton of songwriting awards. Getting these accolades from the music industry is a strong recommendation for his art. “Rupert’s music combines the smooth graceful voice of a James Taylor with the somewhat edgier lyrics of a Marc Cohn.” See:   www.rupertwatesmusic.com

Saturday, December 10     7:30-9:30 p.m.
Ernie Lawrence, Perry NY
folk, blues, spirituals, old country
In a few years Ernie and his son Andrew played more than 250 shows in clubs, coffeehouses and festivals around western NY. Andrew has recently moved away. Now Ernie is playing alone. He excels at sharing interesting background material for this great American traditional music during his shows. See:   http://ernielawrence.com/

Thursday, December 15     7:00-10:00 p.m.
Holiday Open Mic BENEFIT   Hosts Bob and Gena Decker
All acoustic music is welcome; seasonal music is encouraged this evening. This is a benefit for Community Action Angels, so please be generous. We’ll accept cash donations and we’ll have a Silent Auction with fine merchandise.

Friday, December 16     7:30-9:30 p.m.
Nick Young, Livonia NY
songwriter, Americana, alt. country, folk
Nick is first and foremost a great songwriter.  His lyrics are sincere glimpses of how people relate to each other these days. He captures all of our outlandish posturing with colorful images. Then he delivers the songs with a voice which I've always enjoyed for its innocent quality. See:   http://www.nickyoungonline.com/

Saturday, December 17     7:30-9:30 p.m.
M. R. Poulopoulos, Albany NY
songwriter, roots music, Americana
“Poulopoulos proves that roots rock doesn’t have to ‘rock’ to be effective. Make no mistake, this is not sleepy music, but it has a welcome maturity and thoughtfulness.” - Michael Eck, Albany Times Union    See:   http://www.mrpoulopoulos.com/

Tuesday, December 20     7:00-9:00 p.m.
Spoken Word — an evening of poetry
