A Finger Lakes winery was named Winery of the Year, and a wine from the North Fork of Long Island won the Governor's Cup for best New York state wine.
What interested me when reading about these awards is that I have enjoyed visiting the Lodi, NY winery with its architectually modern appearance and outside views many times, and the Riverhead,NY winery is in my hometown. I've had their wines, and they are terrific.
The awards were announced Tuesday at the New York Wine and Food Classic in Watkins Glen, Schuyler County.
Winery of the year --Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars of Lodi, Seneca County -- was chosen by a panel of 21 judges from around the world.
The award is based on the number and level of medals a winery's products receive. Contenders must enter at least seven wines. Lamoreaux Landing won Best Overall Chardonnay and Best Chardonnay, along with several other top medals.
A 2010 Riesling from Martha Clara Vineyards of Riverhead was presented with the silver Governor's Cup chalice. It was chosen from 741 wines submitted by 105 wineries.
