There were no surprises at the Union Square Italian Bistro in Hammondsport on New Year's Eve. The consistency in food quality, the efficiency of the wait staff and the sleek atmosphere combined to make a good impression on diners in our group, both regulars and newcomers.
I was glad that the Bistro did take reservations for the evening, and hope that this will remain part of their regular policy. It was so much nicer coming for a later dinner without the stress of having a back up plan somewhere else.
Diners lingered a bit longer at our table, but we waited in the comfortable downstairs in the Grotto bar enjoying wine and talking together. Our waiter kept us informed as to the time we could be seated. All can be forgiven on a special night, and that did not annoy us one bit.
When we did get settled at our table in an excellent location near the back of the restuarant, we were served promptly and there was a nice pacing to our courses. I shared an arugala salad before my simple grill of salmon. My husband chose the shrimp scampi and steak that was served with squash and mashed potatoes. Our guests selected Italian dishes-Spaghetti Bolognese and traditional spaghetti and meatballs. Dessert was tiramisu, and it was presented attractively with choclate swirls on the plate. Needless to say, we were well-fed and contented with extra food to take home for later.
